Death of Sister Judith Oland – September 11, 2017
It is with deep sadness that we report that sister Judith Oland, the ACPE Certified Educator at St. Mary’s CPE Program in Duluth, MN died yesterday after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer shortly after the ACPE Annual Meeting last spring. Candidate Supervisor (and friend, student & colleague) in Duluth, Sonja Anderson, wrote me the following:
“Sr. Judith died today at 12:15. Sisters had been with her, saying the prayers for the dying and left her at 11:45 to say mass. One of them stayed with her, and she died just as they were finishing mass. She LOVED mass, so this was appropriate. Sr. Judith had a very beautiful, gentle death. She lived for two months without too much pain, after moving to the nursing wing of the monastery where the sisters are allowed to receive guests. Before she had lived in the cloister, only receiving guests in the common room. People came “out of the woodwork” to express their love and gratitude. She received these visits into her home with such an open heart. I said my final goodbyes to her last Thursday as I was out of town for the weekend and didn’t expect her to live through the weekend. The two of us had some final tender moments in addition to many others we had shared. I feel satisfied and grateful for that.
I believe her funeral at the monastery will be after September 17. I will let you know.”
Please keep Sr. Judith’s family, her Benedictine Community, and our NCR and greater ACPE community in your prayers. We have lost yet another wonderful friend and colleague.
